Brief:

We were invited to a central London school occupying a compact site with a tarmac play area and very limited green space in a small garden.

Working closely with the Head Teacher our brief was to encourage active and imaginative play, incorporate a quieter area and add some further green space to the playground whilst keeping as much of the free play space as possible.

Project:

Our design took advantage of the corners in the playground and transformed this lost space into specific elements identified in the brief. These included a corner stage for imaginative play and trim trail to promote active play. A timber deck area with seating was enclosed with raised planter beds filled with herbs and tactile planting as a sensory area.

Further improvements included adding seating to a parents waiting area and turning a muddy patch into a usable space with lazy lawn.

The facilities available to the older children now compare favourably with the existing nursery area of the school.
